Get Out Fort Wayne Day: Sept. 27

Posted on September 27th, 2008, by dan jehl

Today is a Fall Saturday with perfect weather, and a day to “get out.”

Today is a day with many community, fun, outdoor events day and nite.

To name a few:   It’s Fort to Fitness this morning downtown, and the Hunger Walk at Lawton Park.

At 10:00 at Headwaters Park, Mayor Tom Henry, after doing the Fort to Fitness run/walk or jog, will issue a proclamation officially noting Hispanic Heritage Month.

From 10-11:00 p.m. is the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Headwaters.  All proceeds will go to the Jorge’ Gonzalez Trust at National City Bank.  This is a huge benefit for Fort Wayne’s 15-year-old who needs a kidney transplant at Riley Hospital.   The schedule of events is amazing with day and nite music, food, fun for children  and more.   The bands are donating their time for this cause.

From 10-2:00 p.m. is the Celebrate Reading and more at the Fort Wayne Urban League.  The Urban League, local Pontiac Library, Brown Mackie College, and HealthVisions will all be open on the Urban League campus on South Hannah and Creighton for this big event.

And there is so much more today publicized already.

It is a day to “get out” and enjoy and be part of community events that better the overall community with  fun doing it.

It’s “Health of the Community Day”

Posted on September 24th, 2008, by dan jehl

If you are interested in health and health care, today is your day.

There are two community events that have it all.

The first is the Public 1-sponsored Summit City Health Care Summit at the Downtown Library from 9-3:00 p.m.  It is a free consumer event brought about by a citizen volunteer coalition of interested Fort Wayne-area residents.  The theme is the “Health of the Community,” and we will now find out how we rate and how we can do better.  This is informational, educational, and public awareness all in one.

How do we compare among industrialized nations?  Dr. Jon Walker, recent Business Weekly’s Health Care Heroes Award Winner,  will present this.

How do we compare to other communities and how rich are we in healthcare resources?  Dr. Deb McMahan, City-County Health Commisioner, will present this.

How about the Health of Hoosiers?  The State’s Health Commissioner, Judy Monroe, M.D., will tell us.

What about community health care resources in the community?   Local community healthcare groups will have resource tables with information.  At noon, there will be a panel discussing the Fort Wayne VA and Medical Center and its future.  Paul Wilson, CEO of Park Center, will discuss behavioral and mental health services.

Can we do better?   Both the Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain campaign representatives will present the national health care plans for the future.

The second event  of the day is a “Health Information Fair” at Anthony Medical Center on “Getting Covered” sponsored by Lutheran Hospital Network and others.  This is from 2-6:00 p.m.

At both events, there will resource people from the State of Indiana and the Healthy Indiana Plan to help people learn about and to get covered by state programs for the uninsured and low income people.

This is a great opportunity to learn and increase awareness on the Health of the Community.

For information on the program schedule, call (260)-442-8619.

Cinema Center presents The Devil Music Ensemble - 9/13/2008

Posted on September 9th, 2008, by slparker67

The Devil Music Ensemble will be performing their original score to Red Heroine, Live on Saturday September 13 at Cinema Center @ Indiana Tech, 8PM

Don’t miss this one of a kind performance!

Tickets are $15. General Admission $10. Cinema Center Members & Students Advance tickets are available at Cinema Center Downtown (437 E. Berry St.) or at Cinema Center at Indiana Tech (1600 E. Washington Blvd.) during box office hours. (Box office is open 30 min. before each show)

The Devil Music Ensemble
The DME have performed Nosferatu, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Big Stakes and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari at Cinema Center and have been on numerous tours playing soundtracks for silent film; performing in museums, theaters, performing arts centers, and college campuses. Their current 2008 tour will take them all over the entire United States. The DME, formed in Boston in 1999, is comprised of Brendon Wood on guitars, lap steel, and synthesizer; Jonah Rapino on electric violin, vibraphone, and synthesizer; and Tim Nylander on drums, percussion and synthesizer. Brendon Wood, from Tiverton RI, has his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music from the University of Mass. Jonah Rapino, from Toledo Ohio, received his Bachelors Fine Arts in classical music performance from Boston University. Tim Nylander, from Portsmouth NH, received his Bachelors in Fine Arts from Harvard University.

Red Heroine
On Saturday, September 13th at 8PM the Devil Music Ensemble will perform a live music performance with an amazing and virtually unknown classic silent Chinese Kung Fu film called Red Heroine (directed by Wen Yimin 1929). The performance consists of a projection of this amazing film accompanied by a new original soundtrack performed live by the DME.

This film is the only feature length Chinese martial arts film from the silent era that still exists in its entirety! The score created by the DME will be the only modern score to be written specifically for this film!

The DME offers a very unique multimedia experience, presenting a synthesis of live music and movie to entertain and inspire audiences. The greatest asset of the DME is their ability through music to control the audiences’ responses to what is being presented to them visually via a silent film. Audience members often forget that a live band is playing the soundtrack and are all of sudden snatched out of the suspension of disbelief to see exactly how the music for the film is unfolding before their eyes. It’s a thrilling effect.

Starring Fan Xuepeng and directed by Wen Yimin 1929, episode six of RED KNIGHT-ERRANT a.k.a. RED HEROINE, the only surviving episode of the 13-part serial, is also one of the few complete and earliest extant silent martial arts films. This a prime example of the Wuxia pain (errant knight swordplay genre) often based on published novels or serials. A band of outlaws raids a village and kidnaps a maiden, causing the death of the young woman’s grandmother. The captive maiden is rescued by a mysterious Daoist hermit and reemerges three years later as a full-fledged warrior, flying to the sky to revenge her grandmother’s death. While generously sprinkled with anachronisms and prurient incongruities (imagine a bandit’s harem of beauties in bikinis!), the film remains a robust telling of a young woman’s transformation from abject victim to resolute warrior.
