The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society announces the beginning of a major fundraising effort to cover the cost of upgrading a significant component of vintage steam locomotive Nickel Plate Road no. 765, a fully restored and operating 1944-built steam locomotive that was once on display in Fort Wayne’s Lawton Park before being removed and restored between 1974 and 1979 in the first locomotive preservation movement of its kind in the world for public enjoyment. . . . → Read More: 1940s Fort Wayne locomotive to receive upgrades Fort Wayne engineer Andrew Enyart races restored Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 765 …after successful passenger excursions in North Judson, Indiana and Owosso Michigan. During the past week, I’ve discovered several video clips from 2007. I have uploaded them to YouTube. The above video clip is of the Sunbeam Bread sign above Perfection Bakeries. This was shortly before the sign was renovated.
Last Friday, I was priveleged to be able to attend a photo opportunity at the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. The subject of the photo opportunity was the FWRHS’s 2-8-4 Berkshire NKP 765. Nine passenger cars were lined up, the 765 was pulled from the shop and moved into place. Photos were taken and the 765 was moved back to the shop. Assisting with the movement of the 765 was a former Amtrak F40, now Ohio Central Railroad #452. For those keeping track, when wearing Amtrak paint, the 452 was numbered 348. Anyway, even though the weather wasn’t the best – light rain, drizzle – photos were taken and dreams of standing trackside with the 765 rushing by were reignited. Thanks to Kelly Lynch for allowing AFW to attend!

Press release from the Fort Wayne Historical Railroad Society:
No, it’s not geekspeak. For those steam locomotive enthusiasts amongst us, nothing excites the locals more than the number 765. This is the locally restored 2-8-4 Nickel Plate Railroad Berkshire steam locomotive that sat in Lawton Park for years before being rescued. Exciting news from the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society! The 765 will once again ride the rails, live and under steam! This will probably go down as one of the most eagerly anticipated events in recent Allen County history. The foamers, that’s geek-speak for railfans – of which I am one, have been, well, er, foaming ever since it was announced a couple of years ago that the 765 had been taken to Van Wert, Ohio and back a couple of times on a shake down run. For security reasons, that run was not publicized and not many learned about it only after it had been completed. The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society’s Annual Open House was held August 16th and 17th. The restored NKP 765 Steam Locomotive was not under steam as in past years. The crowds were thin, but this allowed for an opportunity to get up close and personal with the 765 and various other rolling stock the Society owns. A selection of photos taken around the facility and also a C&NW Railroad Speeder that was available for short rides. There is also a new video posted on the AFW YouTube Channel. A little late, but I have posted a photo set from the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society’s 2007 Open House. The main attraction is the rebuilt Nickel Plate Railroad #765 Berkshire Steam Locomotive. This beautiful 15 feet tall, 404 ton living, breathing analog machinery is a sight to behold. The FWRHS is currently working on setting up some excursions. Best of luck to them as there’s many of us waiting to see this beauty puffing along under full steam, riding those iron rails! A selection of photos is included with this post – for the bulk of the photos, follow this link. Visit the FWRHS by clicking here. Also, information about the 2008 Annual Open House.
I have set up a video channel on YouTube. I am not sure how long this experiment will last, however I will give it a reasonable try. The problem is I need to remember to grab my video-enabled camera when I leave. If I can ever get my computer to talk . . . → Read More: New – The AFW Blog on YouTube Channel |
