FWCS students celebrate Thanksgiving
Fort Wayne Community Schools students will celebrate Thanksgiving by learning about the holiday, enjoying their own Thanksgiving feasts and helping others in the community. Below are some of the events taking place over the next week:
Friday, Nov. 20
- Staff and students will sit down together at 11:30 a.m. for their annual Thanksgiving meal at Nebraska Elementary, 1525 Boone St. Kindergarten students will provide entertainment by singing.
Monday, Nov. 23
- Kindergarten students at Irwin Elementary, 3501 S. Anthony Blvd., will have a simple feast at 2 p.m. Students will share their versions and reasons of why we celebrate Thanksgiving.
Tuesday, Nov. 24
- Kindergartners at Bunche Montessori Early Childhood Center, 1111 Greene St., will enjoy stone soup for lunch at 11:15 a.m. Students have read the story of “Stone Soup,” which explains how a village makes a delicious meal by working together.
Wednesday, Nov. 25
- Kindergarten students at Bunche Montessori will have a Thanksgiving feast for lunch at 11:15 a.m.
- Students at Indian Village Elementary, 33835 Wenonah Lane, will enjoy their annual Thanksgiving feast at 11:30 a.m. Students dress up for the day and a special meal is ordered. Lunch includes turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dinner roll, cranberry Jell-O and pumpkin cake.
- Kindergarten students at Croninger Elementary, 6700 Trier Road, will enjoy stone soup for lunch at 11:40 a.m. The students have read the story “Stone Soup” and will make the soup Tuesday afternoon. On Monday, they will make friendship bracelets that they will wear while they eat their stone soup.
- First-graders at Croninger will dress as Pilgrims and Indians and have a feast of apple slices, popcorn, pumpkin cake and juice at 2 p.m. They will also watch “The Mouse on the Mayflower,” an animated, historical movie.
- Jane Avery, CEO and director of the Community Harvest Food Bank, will be the keynote speaker at the Thanksgiving Assembly at Memorial Park Middle School, 2200 Maumee Ave. The assembly will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include vocal and instrumental musical ensembles. At the conclusion, the food contributed to the annual Thanksgiving food drive will be distributed.
Ongoing
- Four FWCS high schools are working together to gather food for Miss Virginia’s Mission House and St. Mary’s Christmas Food Box Program. North Side, Snider, New Tech students at Wayne and Elmhurst are hosting food drives and asking neighbors of the schools to contribute. Some students will be out in neighborhoods collecting door-to-door from homes and businesses. Others will work school events to collect donations. Students will also help box items at Miss Virginia’s and St. Mary’s and will help serve meals at St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen on Thanksgiving Day. Food items and donations will be collected through Dec. 11.
- New Tech students are also writing letters to soldiers thanking them for their service after watching the movie “Taking Chance,” a movie about a fallen soldier that caused students to reflect on how many people give up their lives for our freedom.
