Press release from Habitat for Humanity:
AEP Employee Honored by Grant to Fort Wayne Habitat
Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity received a grant from American Electric Power in honor of AEP employee Sandra Schlemmer’s significant volunteer service.
The AEP Connects program recognizes the commitment of AEP employees and retirees to their communities and supports causes that are important to them, according to Michael G. Morris, chairman, president and chief executive officer. More than 940 grants were made company-wide last year representing more than 124,000 volunteer hours donated by AEP employees and retirees and their families.
“Although no monetary grant can compare to the value of the time our employees and retirees give to worthwhile causes, the $150 grants made by this program in the names of AEP volunteers will help schools and nonprofit organizations meet the challenges of fulfilling important human needs,” Morris said.
About Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity
Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)3 non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that uses volunteer labor to build simple, affordable homes through partnerships with low-income Allen County families. Once completed the homes are sold to the family with a $500 down payment and at no profit on a 20-year, interest-free mortgage. Because of volunteer involvement, the cost of a standard three-bedroom home is kept affordable at approximately $65,000, with the monthly mortgage payment around $350, which includes taxes and insurance. Mortgage payments are then reinvested in the community in the form of additional housing opportunities. Fort Wayne Habitat has built 126 homes in the Fort Wayne area and an additional 73 homes in other countries with money tithed to Habitat International.
