TinCaps, Parkview Field – you’ve made us proud!

The crowd

The last regular season home game was played at Parkview Field Friday, September 4, 2009.  A great inaugural season, but more on that at the end of this post.

The TinCaps beat the Great Lakes Loons, 1-0.  That one run didn’t come until the bottom of the 8th and was quite the scene.

From the TinCaps website:

In the bottom of the 8th, Cole Figueroa bounced a leadoff single into left. Vince Belnome followed with a sacrifice bunt which was mishandled by LHP Geison Aguasviva and both runners were safe. Cody Decker drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Adam Zornes bounced into a fielder’s choice as Figueroa was cut down at the plate. Then, Robertson lined a ball to left. Loons left fielder Alfredo Silverio caught the ball and fired to the plate well ahead of Belnome, but the umpire ruled the catcher never applied the tag and Belnome scored the only run of the game. Three Loons, including manager Juan Bustabad, were ejected for arguing the call.

At the end of the game, the TinCaps held their annual awards ceremony.

From the TinCaps website:

[...] Jaff Decker, 19, and Blake Tekotte, 22, were named the team’s co-MVPs. Decker missed the first two weeks of the season due to a concussion sustained during Spring Training, but jumped into the middle of the lineup. He is hitting .300 with 16 home runs and 63 RBIs.

Tekotte was on the Opening Day roster and, despite getting off to a slow start at the plate, was steady defensively in center field. The University of Miami product picked it up in the second half, batting .270 since the All-Star break. Tekotte leads the team with 30 stolen bases.

Simon Castro, 21, was honored as the TinCaps’ Starting Pitcher of the Year. The Dominican native went 10-6 with a 3.33 ERA and leads the Midwest League with 148 strikeouts. On August 18th, he fired Fort Wayne’s first-ever no-hitter, a seven-inning effort against the Dayton Dragons.

Brad Brach, 23, earned the Relief Pitcher of the Year award. The Monmouth University product was a Midwest League Mid-Season and Full-Season All-Star. He is 3-3 with a 1.29 ERA and a league-leading 33 saves. Brach was a 42nd-round selection in last year’s draft.

Daniel Robertson, 23, was named the TinCaps’ Community Player of the Year for his impact in the Fort Wayne area. The Oregon State University product was among the most active TinCaps players in the community, attending events including skills clinics and charity functions.

A beautiful evening indeed for a baseball game in downtown Fort Wayne.  The end of the regular season and a record breaking season for the TinCaps franchise in so many respects.  It would have been easy for the TinCaps staff and team to have coasted through this first season at Parkview Field solely on the merits of being something new in downtown.  Instead, everyone in the organization -- everyone stepped up to the plate and made this inaugural season one to be remembered a life time!  Great job by one and all!

There is at least one more home game. It will be the second game in the first round series of Midwest League Playoffs and is Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 7:05 pm. If needed a third game can be played at Parkview Field on Friday, September 11, 2009. GO TINCAPS!
