  Iconic Scott’s to close

  The Journal Gazette is reporting that the Scott’s at 5300 Decatur Road is closing February 14th.  Happy Valentine’s Day!  The closing was announced to the store’s 64 employees this morning at 9:30 am.  This is coming on the heels of last week’s announcement of remodelings, 3 new stores, 3 store closings and $75 million in investment along with 250 additional jobs coming to the region.

  The JG states that Kroger’s reasons for the closing are:

  • First, the projected cost of remodeling the store to current standards was too high to make it a sound investment.
  • Second, the nearby Kroger store was remodeled in 2006 at a cost of $1.7 million.

  It also adds that Kroger has stated there will be no other announcements in the short term – whatever that means.

  The question now becomes – what will be done with the cornucopia??  Will ARCH step in and try to save the sign?

  As someone who (unfortunately) has to frequent the Kroger across the street from this Scott’s quite often, it’s hard to tell exactly what that $1.7 million was spent on. The store is routinely filthy and hard to navigate. Not to mention woefully understaffed. Comparatively speaking, the Scott’s now slated for closing was much cleaner and easier to get around. Why not just rebrand that store into a Kroger, keep the cornucopia, and close down the –mess– across the street?

  Kevin, I had the same thoughts about the cleanliness and navigation issues. You also forgot to mention the staff’s attitude. I’ve found them to be surly and downright unhelpful most times.

  Some of your readers will remember that this store was built in 1958 as Eavey’s. It was the largest supermarket in the world. The store, with it’s own coffee and peanut roasters, candy and flower departments was so unique it merited a story in LIFE magazine.
